30 kinds of wonderful: 6. Birthday in Kerala.

OK, so I’m doing this thing where I’m counting down to my 30th birthday with 30 kinds of wonderful. If you need to catch up, just start here.
Now let’s go!

6. Birthday in Kerala

Having explained already that I like to get away, far away, for my birthday, you won’t be surprised to hear that I celebrated my 29th in Kerala in Southern India.

We rented a houseboat and drifted around the backwaters of Kerala for three days, just the beloved design fascist, three “staff” (how dreadfully colonial does that sound?), one VERY large spider, about 100,000 insects, and me!

It really was utterly wonderful. We made only two stops, the first to buy the most amazing crayfish from a floating market which was cooked for our dinner that night, and the second to check out an old church and meet a rather charming man who carves the religious icons for churches all over India.

In the evening we would drop anchor in a secluded bay somewhere and watch the local fisherman throw out their nets while the sun set.

Then the insects would descend and we’d scurry inside and have another incredible meal – stunning home made breads, curries, salads and of course the freshest seafood. Bliss.

Breakfast (part one of many!). Happy sigh…

We reached the houseboat via a motor boat – we cut through dense water hyacinths (not being a horticulturalist, I might be quite wrong in my nomenclature!) leaving the rather nice resort far behind us.

In Cochin prior to our houseboat adventure… I was rather taken by the goats!

And… yep, another film!

To be continued…
